Your visit to the Mat Clinic based @ akarmalife studios, Ampthill
What can I expect?
In the clinic, the therapist will take your details in the form of your case history. You will be asked questions on the condition that you wish to be treated, medical history, health and fitness, occupation and family medical history.
If it is a physical therapy you may be asked to undress to a suitable level of undress dependant on the therapy, therapist or approach. It is advised that your wear shorts and a sports top for females. If it is an oil massage, you may be asked to wear a normal bra as the area is more accessible, but consent will be asked for. All of this you can check out before hand with your therapist. Anything that allows us to examine your body will be suitable and you do not have to undress if you are uncomfortable. You may be asked to perform a series of movements seated/standing and/or on the treatment couch for further examinations from the therapist. Each of our physical therapists has a different approach.
If examinations have been performed, the therapist will discuss what they think the problem is, the treatment plan for that problem and ask for your consent to perform treatment.
Please bring with you any recent reports or scan results you may have had if pertinent to the condition about which you wish to see us.
Probably the single most important thing we can do is hear your pain as you describe it to us. Being heard has immense value.
If we are working with you on a physical issue with one of our manual therapists there will be physical contact involved between you and the therapist, at all times you are in control. Please be aware that by consenting to manual therapy there is going to be "touch" involved. If there is any issue with this please let the therapist know immediately before they place their hands on you. The therapist will check in with you throughout the session at various points to make sure you are happy that the pressure being used or the areas treated is acceptable, however there are going to be times that what we may need to do will hurt or we may come across an area that, "feels" ok but as the client you really respond to this. This is all part of the relationship you build between yourself and your therapist. It is 2 way communication and relies as much on you for feedback as it does our skills as therapists.
Mental and Emotional Therapies
In the clinic, the approach is the same as it is for physical therapies, the therapist will take your details in the form of your case history. You will be asked questions on the condition that you wish to be treated, medical history, health and fitness, occupation and family medical history.
From here each therapist will explain their individual approach but you are in control throughout any therapy and the relationship of trust built works both ways.
If we feel there is benefit in you working with another therapist or teacher we will ask permission for any information to be released before doing so and again you have the absolute right to refuse however this could impact the ability for us to give you the best possible outcome but the choice always remains with you.
All information received is treated with the utmost confidence. We are GDPR compliant.
How long does a treatment take?
An initial consultation is generally between 1hr and 1.5hrs, follow ups can be from 30mins upwards. It will depend upon the Therapy and Therapist but is usually covered by the Therapist at the outset. If it hasn't been covered please ask.
Fees are dependent upon the Therapist, length of time and type of Therapy as some have additional equipment such as K-Tape, Needles, Ayurvedic Oils etc. Your Therapist will cover this with you. Fees start from £30 and range up to £85.

As a health-focused clinic we are obliged to protect our patients by preventing the spread of easily contained diseases. Please contact us to notify us of any illnesses as soon as you find out and we will be happy to reschedule your appointment if required. We would much rather have a single missed clinic slot than several days off work and our patients having to wait for treatment for that time.
If you arrive at the clinic for an appointment and are displaying symptoms of a communicable disease we reserve the right to refuse treatment on the grounds of preventing further infection. We also reserve the right to charge for the appointment slot.
We operate a 24 hour cancellation policy. We reserve the right to charge for any cancellations made within 24 hours of the appointment.
Frequently other patients are in pain and are on a waiting list in the event that a slot opens up. If you need to cancel or reschedule please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer the slots to other patients in need.
If you need to cancel your appointment, you can do so by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org .When booking your initial appointment your therapist will give you their contact details in order that you will be able to communicate via either text or other social media services.
